Nicki Minaj Has Arrived

Love or Hate her, there is no denying that Nicki Minaj is making an impact in the music industry. Now she is a record breaking artist.
OK let me be clear on one thing, I AM NOT A NICKI MINAJ fan. I find her lyrics uninspired and lacking in depth. Being that I am not much of Hip-hop fan, I guess I can be exempt from having to judge the artistic merit of her music. That said, it's hard these days to ignore Ms Minaj. She is everywhere.

Long before her debut albumn she had whored herself to every popular musician's song. I first heard of her when she did a remix on one of Beyonce's I Am Sacha Fierce songs, Sweet Dreams.

Given that every kitten on Facebook had her name attached to theirs, it was pretty much clear that she was a major player in popular culture. All of the sudden Beyonce was no longer on their profiles and her lyrics being quoted all the time, Nicki Minaj was the new in thing.

This year, Minaj showed that LOVE or HATE her, you certainly will not ignore her. Upon the release of her much anticipated debut albumn she performed skits on America's Saturday Night Live, ranking in the second highest number this season while by the beginning of FEB her albumn was steady at No.1 (Rap Albumn) in the US for 3 consecutive weeks.

In that very same week she was still in the top 10 of the Billboards charts even knocking country/pop favourite Taylor Swift from the top spot

Her Records:

  • Only female rapper to simultaneously have a #1 album and #1 single in the US (Pink Friday , Moment 4 Life)
  • *Only female rapper to have #1 album on the Billboard 200, Billboard Rap Albums, and Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop albums
  • Biggest first week sales for a female rap album
  • Female rap album with the most consecutive weeks in the Top 10 (Billboard 200)
  • Female rap album with the most weeks at #1 (Billboard Rap Albums and Billboard Hip-Hop/RNB Albums)
  • Fourth female rapper ever with a #1 album in the US (Foxy Brown, Eve, Lauryn Hill)
  • Female rap album with the most Billboard Hot 100 entries ever (5)
  • Female rap album with the most Billboard Hot 100 entries ever in a single week (4)
  • Highest selling female rap album release since 2003 (La Bella Mafia - 1.1 Million)

With all this success, no doubt Nicki deserves some respect. I used to think that Nicki represents a sad degradation in the craft of music. The girl is outrageous and seems to hog attention with her colourful wigs, ass-flaunting and sexual nuances which at the end of the day was just pandering to misogynistic pop culture which deems women as nothing but objects of lust.

Plus with Lady GAGA already owning the THEATRICALITY evolution of the music industry, she seemed like just a wanna-be. There is nothing new about Minaj or special for that matter but she is captivating.

Not to hate but to put it bluntly, she is just a caricature of the most basic I-will-do-anything-however-immoral-or-degrading-to-get-to-the-top female trait. Not the best label to aspire to but hey, the girl is now worth over $8 mil, so ....

Let's face it. Minaj is no Lauryn Hill or Missy Elliot. Her song as they are now, will never be anthems nor will they evoke any social consciousness among our communities. Her lyrics are catchy and fun, that's it.

One can even go as far as to say that her success is credit to the fact that she came at the right time when there is a drought of Female Rap artist. When last did a female rap artist have such massive success post Missy's Under Construction record breaking albumn?

Gimmicks and publicity stunts aside, Nicki Minaj is clearly a force to be reckoned with and is at the forefront of change in how music and its genres can be defined. Her effortless capability to fuse her rap into any song of any genre is proof that she has “some” creative bone in her and for that she deserves our acknowledgement.

Is she the greatest? Hellllllll no but for now she can reign as the Queen Of Rap, if the sales numbers are anything to go by. It still remains to be seen if her antics have any longevity in this fickle industry that celebrate you today and rebuke you the next day.
