Channel O Video Music Awards 2011

Last night I attended the Channel O Music Video Awards, held in Sandton convention Centre. What a night it was. Though I can not pretend that I knew most of the artists that were there, I had an awesome time and am ashamed to say that I can not believe I had not taken the time to get to know about the talent in our continent.

The hosts for the event were Nigeria’s Banky W and South Africa’s Dineo Moeketsi, who did a stellar job. My girl Dineo should stop speaking like she is singing. Those gimmicks with the high and low voice pitch when she talked were a bit of a distraction - just talk naturally when you are presenting. She did look radiant in the dresses that she donned for the occasion. I was a bit concerned when she made her first appearance on stage with a leopard print dress and her weave looked like a lion's mane. Needless to say she redeemed herself and by the end of the evening she looked like a princess in a purple number.

The performances were awesome too. The show kicked of with a performance by the gorgeous Tiwa Savage who could have passed off as any of those American girls on MTV anytime. Who knew Africa had that many Beyonce wannabes? The best performance of the evening came courtesy of Angola's Cabo Snoop, wow what an energetic young man. The boy had the crowd shaking what their mama gave them with his continental hit, "Windeck". Equally impressive was South African rap star, AKA and ... there is this guy called Flavour. Wow.

D'Banj maybe considered Africa's biggest superstar because of his collaboration with international stars but in terms of mass appeal on the continent, Flavour is undoubtedly the biggest star on the continent at the moment. He performed right after Theo Kgosinkwe and totally upstaged him. The crowd went wild for this down-to-earth Nigerian superstar. Everybody in the auditorium was either dancing or singing along to "Nwa Baby". Even South Africans were singing along to the lyrics;
Oh baby sawaley
Sawa sawa sawaley (2x)
Ashawo (Ashhhhh)
My fellow South Africans were probably not saying the lyrics correctly but who cares. They love the song. This track transcends cultural and geographical boundaries of our continent. Every African in that room showed Flavour some mad love and I was mesmerized and equally proud that an African brother can achieve that. I am a new fan.

The show hadn't gone without any controversies though. Notably absent at the event was this year's Special Recognition Award recipient, Nigerian D'Banj, perhaps confirming reports that he had turned back from the airport after discovering that the organisers had booked him in Economy class for his flight to the event. When I first heard this rumour, I obviously instantly thought, what an arrogant snob but then I gave it some thought. I then realised that what he did is exactly what every African artist should be doing. If you are a superstar you deserve to be treated like one, we are quick to roll out the red carpet for American stars (current and has-beens) so why not give our own the same courtesy. If Kanye West had been invited and agreed, the organisers would have not booked him in economy. As pretentious as Nigerians can be, I totally support D'Banj on this one. He is on the same league as the likes of Akon now, he deserves the same perks.

D'Banj did not totally snub the event. He did accept his award via a recorded video which was telecast during the show. His absence did not mar the event from being a big success. Nigeria dominated the winners list with six awards.
