FNB Whisky Live Festival Opens In Cape Town And Headed To Dbn And Jozi

Over 1600 whisky lovers attended the 10th anniversary FNB Whisky Live Festival opening on the 3rd of October, proving that the mother city appreciates the finer things in life and that whisky is their drink of choice. Bummer, just after I left the Western Cape they decide to host a party of this stature.

South Africa is currently the 5th largest whisky destination in the world in value. The increase in event attendance figures, coupled with a younger, more cross cultural audience, bodes well for the future of the whisky category.

The focus of the event continues to be ‘education’ and the emphasis is on providing festival-goers with an opportunity to interact directly with the master distillers and ambassadors to learn more about the intrinsic aspects of what makes whisky, “whisky”.

Festival-goers were treated to several new-look experiences, such as the Boutique Tasting Room, The Johnnie Walker Platinum experience and the Jack Daniels Barrel Tasting Room. The unique appeal of the festival is the fact that it appeals to connoisseurs and the ‘new to whisky’ festival-goers, providing an unbiased platform to enjoy all types of whisky.

The Schweppes interactive cocktail making zone was a hit with the more youthful audience, whilst the Connoisseur’s Tour, offering unique whiskies hand-selected by master-distillers, appeals to a more discerning whisky drinker.  Specialty whiskies such as the rare Balvenie Fifty, the most expensive bottle of whisky, retailing at R240,000, endorsed the fact that whisky has become a sought after collectors and investment item.

With two more events remaining in Durban and Johannesburg, organisers of the FNB Whisky Live Festival, Karen Chaloner and Sian Neubert are excited about the next two shows and are confident that the festival will continue to appeal to all markets and generations who want to “Discover the Mystery” at the FNB Whisky Live Festival!

Showcasing whiskies from all around the world, the FNB Whisky Live Festival is the largest, whisky and lifestyle event of its kind and is celebrating its 10th year in 2012.
