This year South African public broadcaster has gone all out to give its viewers and listeners a comprehensive coverage of what is dubbed as the biggest guilty of the country's social calendar, Durban July. For your convenience this is your guide of what the SABC will be covering for you if you can not make it to the events.
SABC will partner with the Vodacom Durban July on Saturday 6 July at Greyville Racecourse in Durban. This glitzy annual event focuses on South Africa’s most famous horse race.
Based on the year's theme, ‘POSH? OH MY GOSH!’ race goers are encouraged to put together garments for the race day that add to the special occasion. Competitive-minded designers enter the race day competitions, and the edgy and daring are showcased in the Avant Garde race day competition.
SABC’s involvement at the Vodacom Durban July this year entails the following:
Television
- SABC3: will broadcast a live feed comprising of lifestyle at the horse racing event on Saturday, 6 July 2013 from 14:30 till 17:00.
- SABC3’s lifestyle properties such as Top Billing, Expresso, will cover the Vodacom Durban July and 3Talk with Noeleen will do a Vodacom Durban July special with fashion designers and Vodacom representatives in the studio closer to the event.
Radio
5FM is bringing the party to Durban this July for the station’s fifth Durban Takeover Weekend, with a series of events that have become a can’t-miss on the South African social calendar. Held over four days from 4 to 7 July, the 5FM Durban Takeover Weekend ties in with the Durban July where some of 5FM’s top DJs will be performing live, hosting events and giving back as part of 5FM’s CSI initiative, Youngblood5.
5FM heats up The Miller Boomtown Marquee at the Durban July on Saturday, from 11am with the hottest live entertainment hosted by 5FM’s Poppy Ntshongwana and featuring performances from international rapper 2 Chainz who will be sharing the stage with South African artists to the likes of Dimplez, Khuli Chana, AKA, Vigilante and 5FM DJ’s Rob & Fix, MsCosmo, Milkshake and House Head Euphonik.
The party doesn’t end when the races do – (Live)5 featuring AKA and Khuli Chana hosted by Catherine Grenfell along with the Ultimix: Weekend Edition will broadcast live from the 5FM Miller Boomtown Marquee, keeping the good vibes going from 5pm to 10pm with the beats from 5FM’s Euphonik and guest DJ’s Kent and others.
This year 5FM will also host the hottest and Official Vodacom Durban July After Party taking place at the Wave house, Umhlanga. Don’t miss, DJ’s Nick Supply, Classy Menace, Locnville and 5FM DJ’s Milkshake, Roger Goode, Euphonik and Stephanie B. The man looking after you that evening will be Rob Forbes from 6pm to 2am.
Metro FM will be part of the City of Durban marquee during the day at the Durban Vodacom July.
The station will have an Outside Broadcast, 06:00 – 09:00 with Joe (SABC Studio’s), 12:00 – 15:00 with Carole and 15:00 – 18:00 with Sbu, live from the marquee at the racecourse.
On 4th July Metro FM will be handing over a house to the family in Umgababa as part of its CSI initiative. Siphokazi will broadcast live from Umgababa, 09:00 – 12:00 and Amon & Thato will broadcast live from 12:00 – 15:00.
Ukhozi FM will partner with KZN Tourism department and will host a lifestyle marquee at Vodacom Durban July and a beach party as a closing. Ukhozi FM and KZN Tourism department will have a fashion show in the marquee showcasing the best of KZN fashion talent. The guests will be entertained with live performances.
