Zikhona Sodlaka Joins The Cast of After-9

As reported earlier this year, SABC 1's groundbreaking gay mini series After 9 is coming back later this year for a second season. The show is said to retain its leading cast with a few additions. One such addition is prolific stage and screen actress Zikhona Sodlaka.

The first offering of Sechaba Morojele's After 9, though groundbreaking in its plot subject matter, lacked a lot artistically.  The writers relied too much on the shock-value of the subject matter rather than developing characters that could carry story.

Matshepo Maleme, Lucky Khoza and Aaron Moloisi carried the show as well as they could given the lackluster script they had to work. Though one should point out that Moloisi (as Hector - the menacing architect) should have ditched the bike, it just made his character seem too contrived.

The same make-it-work-or-ditch-it sentiments could also be employed for some of the other supporting actors who seemed more like they were just playing instead of bothering to act or get into character. Seriously, did anybody think Khanyi Mbau even took her character seriously?

The addition of Sodlaka in the new season should hopefully lend some substance to the material. The woman has earned her stripes in this business with some stellar performances in shows like Rhythm City, Tsha Tsha, Soul City and Montana.

Her acting prowess, with hopefully a better script and plot this time around, should make for an interesting prime-time viewing when the show eventually airs.

The new season of After 9 is currently in production. No word from the channel about a premiere date yet.
