Khaya Mthethwa Nominated For The Channel O VMAs

The most popular South African Idols-winner ever, Khaya Mthethwa has added another nod on his illustrious career journey with a Channel O nomination that sees him competing with the continent's best musicians. Add this to Khaya's multiple SAMA nominations, including the highly coveted "Record Of The Year", winning the Best Newcomer award at the Metro FM Awards earlier this year, his appearance in the finals of The Clash of the Choirs and you will have to agree that Mthethwa has had a really great year.

Mthethwa was the clear favourite to take home the Idols-crown in 2012, and with an unprecedented 1.8 million votes, it is an indisputable fact that he is the most popular winner of the reality show in this country’s history. His crowning moment during this year’s competition was his rendition of Nicky Minaj’s Super Bass, which of course he included in his debut album For You.

Mthethwa is a singer, songwriter, composer and lyricist, who is particularly adept at working across genres – without so much as breaking a sweat.

Being a consummate all-rounder he is responsible for half of the material on For You. He also co-wrote the radio hit Move, with The Muffinz. The track has been the number one hit single in South Africa for the past six weeks.

Unfortunately as is the case with most reality show winners in SA, Mthethwa’s popularity on the show has earned him the love of the media but his plethora of fans have not run in droves to buy his CD.

Mthethwa is nominated in the Most Gifted Newcomer category with other artists – South African's Moneoa (Is’Bhanxa), Nigeria’s Lola Rae (Watch My Ting Go) and Burna Boy (Tonight) and Kenya’s Victoria Kimani (Mtoto).

The organisers say the multiplicity of genres in this category – from Dance Pop to contemporary Afrobeat and Afro-fusion – provide a brilliant glimpse into the diversity of sounds that currently define Africa’s music scene

South African media and radio stations have rallied strongly behind Mthethwa since his Idols win which has guaranteed him some lucrative gigs and endorsements. Whether this will last it is anyone's guess, but Khaya's talent and humility also stand him in good stead thus assuring him an allegiance from fans for as long as he maintains it.
