Former South African President Nelson Mandela Dies At 95

The world and South Africa mourns as the first democratically elected president of the Republic of South Africa dies at the age of 95. News started pouring in after a frenzy of activity erupted at the Mandela home in Houghton, Johannesburg this evening. 


Local and international media gathered outside the family's residence tonight, Thursday December 5th,  after rumours of an urgent meeting at the ANC stalwart's home in Johannesburg.

Speaking to the SABC earlier this week, the former president's grandchildren said the global icon was not doing well.

Ndaba Mandela said; 
"He is with us. Although he is not doing well at home in bed." 
Tonight at just after 21h00, the current President of South Africa, Mr Jacob Zuma announced; 
"He passed on peacefully in the comapny of his family around 20h50 on December 5."

"He is now resting, he is now in peace. Our nation has lost its greatest son."

Condolences to the Mandela family and South Africa. Madiba's indelible mark in the liberation of black South Africans and the celebrations of this nation's diversity will forever be remembered.

His dream of a free and united South Africa lives on.
