Meet SA's Youngest Doctor Sandile Khubeka

This morning I woke up and saw this inspirational story on eNCA of a dreamchaser in KwaZulu Natal who blazed against all odds to become the country's youngest doctor at just 20. His name is Sandile Kubheka ... sorry, that's Dr Sandile Khubeka, gotta give the man the respect he deserves. His story, like many dreamchasers out there, is a true inspiration to me.
The 20 year old matriculated at Siyamukela High School in Madadeni, Section 2, at the age of 15 and went on to study towards a Bachelors degree in Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) at the University of KwaZulu-Natal Nelson Mandela School of Medicine.
His mother, who has worked at Shoprite for more than 35 years, single-handedly raised five children.
Over the December holidays, while most young South Africans were getting drunk, this young man was volunteering at the Madadeni Hospital.
Sandile says he enjoys giving back to the community volunteering to give free medical treatment and advice to rural communities attending the Happy Valley Clinic and Madadeni Hospital.
He told a local newspaper;
He told a local newspaper;
‘I love working especially with rural communities which often don’t have easy access to medical treatment. I assisted in registering the Happy Valley Clinic as a Non-Profit Organisation during my student years and will continue to work with disadvantaged communities in the future.
‘I’ve had a very humble upbringing and my mum, who raised me and my four siblings on her own, greatly assisted in keeping me grounded. I am the first to qualify as a doctor in my family.’
He is currently serving his internship at Grey’s Hospital in Pietermaritzburg and hopes to eventually register for a Masters of Medicine degree, specialising in Internal Medicine and to super specialise at some stage in Endocrinology.
I am truly inspired.
