Local Stars Battle It Out On The Court for Charity at Brutal Fruit Netball Cup Celeb Challenge

This weekend saw some of our favourite TV stars battling it out for a good course at the Brutal Fruit Netball Cup Celebrity Challenge. Brutal Fruit hosted the celebrity match at the tournament final to benefit POWA (People Opposing Women Abuse). The Brutal Fruit Netball Cup is semi-professional Netball League, launched by Minister of Sports and Recreation, Fikile Mbalula, Netball South Africa and Brutal Fruit.

For the not-to-be-missed game, the celebrity teams, Lavascious Lemons took on the Cheeky Cranberries, supported by the National All Star Netball.

The Brutal Fruit Netball Cup is a catalyst for change for women in sports, offering them an opportunity to strengthen their skill, while becoming role models and true ambassadors of the nation. Brutal Fruit is confident that the sponsorship of the Netball Premier League will drive radical change in women’s sports in South Africa and greater equity in the sports industry as a whole.

Brutal fruits says one of its decision to get involved in the league is to ensure that the face of the sporting hero can also be a heroine, affirming women as credible role models in the sporting fraternity.
The Match

The celebrities walked on to the field after being announced by the host for the Ms Boity Thulo, to a roaring crowd.  It is interesting to have noticed though, that channel affiliation set the cheers size apart. As one would expect, the SABC1 personalities got the loudest cheer but it was Intersexions star, Khanya Mkangisa who got the fans screaming when she ran onto the pitch.

The Brutal Fruit Netball Cup, a first of its kind in Africa, will run for an initial period of five years until 2019.

Celebrity Teams were:

Lavascious Lemons -  Pearl Modiadie, Lalla Hirayama, Zizo Beda, Eda Rose, Pearl Thusi.

Cheeky Cranberries: Jena Dover,  Dineo Moeketsi, Khanya Mkhangisa, Luthando Shosha, Lerato Kganyago, and Brutal Fruit Ambassador Miss Pru
