Former SABC CEO Dali Mpofu Calls Hlaudi Motsoeneng Appointment PATHETIC

Dali Mpofu, a former SABC CEO has joined the growing chorus of concern and criticism leveled at the  SABC, the SABC board, and South Africa's new minister of communications, Faith Muthambi, over the permanent appointment of Hlaudi Motsoeneng as SABC COO, disregarding his multiple maladministration charges in a scathing report from South Africa's Public Protector released earlier this year.

After an extensive investigation, The Public Protector implicated Mr Hlaudi Motsoeneng in maladministration and mismanagement. The report by the body further stated that Mr Motsoeneng’s salary increased from R1.5 million to R2.4m in one year, that he had purged senior staff, and misrepresented his qualifications – that he passed matric – to the SABC.

While on eNCA's political talkshow, The Justice Factor, last week Mr Hlaudi Motsoeneng was asked if he lied and falsified his qualifications, he said NO.

In an interview with Alec Hogg on CNBC Africa Adv Dali Mpofu weighed in on the Motsoeneng saga;
"All I can say is that it's pathetic when we get to a situation where skills are not valued, where the message that we send to young people is that you don't have to work hard to get those degrees or to acquire those skills - all you need is to be connected".
"I always say that even if you are going to employ people who agree with you politically, first and foremost, they must have the skills to do what they have to do".
"It discredits the whole notion of transformation if you're literally going to grab some guy from the taxi rank".
"The job of SABC COO is a very complex job. The job of the COO at the SABC is even more complex than the CEO's job, so I don't understand how anyone who allegedly does not have matric can even do it at all".
Hlaudi Motsoeneng was cleared of all wrongdoing by a legal firm before being permanently appointed as the public broadcaster’s new Chief Operations Officer, Communications Minister Faith Muthambi said on Thursday.

Advocate Mpofu was the Group Chief Executive Officer of the South African Broadcasting Corporation from 2005 to 2008. He holds BProc (1998) and LLB (1992) degrees from the University of the Witwatersrand. His other professional qualifications include a certificate in Finance and Accounting. He is currently studying towards a Bachelor of Commerce degree.
