TCM Remembers The Late, Great Lauren Bacall

Lauren Bacall, the iconic actress with the big eyes and husky voice who captured Humphrey Bogart's heart both on and off the movie screen, died on Tuesday at the age of 89.

Bacall launched her film career as the leading lady in Bogart’s film To Have and Have Not in 1944 and went on to star in some of Hollywood’s most acclaimed titles. She received a Golden Globe and Academy Award nomination for her role in The Mirror has Two Faces in 1996 and also appeared in various Broadway musicals, earning herself two Tony awards.

TCM, DStv channel 137, is currently running a series of Bogart and Bacall titles to commemorate the success of this much-loved duo. Bacall was married to Bogart from 1945 until his death in 1957 and they shared two children.
“This week we saw the loss of a true great of the movie industry, whose passing leaves behind a legacy for which she will always be fondly remembered. As part of TCM’s ongoing commemoration of her and husband Humphrey Bogart’s greatest on screen endeavours, we hope that our upcoming titles will give South African viewers the opportunity to once again experience her unique on screen presence at this time of mourning.” says Guillermo Farré, Head of General Entertainment for Turner Africa.

The following Bacall and Bogart titles will be aired on TCM, DStv channel 137, on Saturdays at 15:00 this month:
  •  Key Largo - 16 August

Robinson) while visiting the widow of an old army friend (Bacall) on an island off the coast of Florida. Also features an Academy Award winning performance from Claire Trevor for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.
  •  The Treasure of Sierra Madre - 23 August

Humphrey Bogart stars in John Huston’s neo-western as one of two financially desperate Americans who convince an old prospector to join them in the search for gold in Mexico’s bandit-ridden Sierra Madre Mountains. In 1990, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry due to being “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant” by the Library of Congress.

  • Designing Woman - 30 August

Bacall stars with Gregory Peck as a newlywed couple who discover they have little in common on moving in together. However, they find more pressing matters at hand when New York mobster (Edward Platt) takes exception to accusations of match fixing and Mike (Peck) is forced into hiding in this critically acclaimed romantic comedy.
