ANN7 2014 South African Of the Year: Trendsetting Celebrity Of The Year Nominees
The South African 24-hour TV news channel run by Infinity Media on MultiChoice’s DStv satellite pay-TV platform, ANN7, has just turned one year old this month. Hot off that, the channel will be hosting its inaugural South African of the Year Awards ceremony in Johannesburg.
The SATY campaign was borne out of the sucess of the TV series "I am South African" which celebrates the "20 years of Democracy" by weaving a retrospective thread from the tumultuous & devastating Apartheid era to the birth of South Africa's young democracy history and through to the extraordinary milestone that is the 20th year of South Africa's democracy.
The inaugural "South African of the Year Awards" are an extravaganza with a local and international star studded line up. ANN7 assures the public that South African of the Year awards will be held in high regard for precision, providingcomplete information about the process of nomination and selection of the final winners.
The selection process for the nominees works as follows;
A panel made up of well known and respected editors from various media houses like Chris Whitfield, Paula Fray, Mathatha Tsedu, Moshoeshoe Monare, Yusuf Abramjee, Moegsien Williams among others choose committees to draw a list of nominations in various fields.
Award verticals are Entertainment, Sports, Business, Spirit of Humanity, Youth, Lifetime Achievement and South African of the Year Award.
The selection process is then audited by KPMG .
To get the 50 000 votes, ANN7 marketing team went to busiest corners of JHB, DBN & CPT to engage with public around the SATY awards concept and secure their votes. Voting activations were held in Johannesburg & Pretoria taxi ranks, King Zwelitini stadium in Durban, Sandton City, WITS & TUT campuses, Wonderpark & Sashonghuve malls in Pretoria to name a few.
The Super Weekend Activation with Kwaito star Mandoza at TUT Main campus, Pretoria, Westgate Mall and Maponya Mall on 22nd, 23rd & 24th August 2014 respectively was with people from all walks of life taking part in the voting process to choose their favourite nominees in each category.

My thoughts? One would have to get the definition of trendsetter from the panel to understand the criteria they used to select these individuals. For me personally, a trendsetter is someone who influences trends. Someone like AKA, the guy has been a major talking point for the industry this year and there is no deny his influence on the hip-hop culture .
Minnie Dlamini made few headlines this year because of her relationship with Itumeleng Khune but in reality what did she really influence with her celebrity status?
IFani was one of the most talked about musicians and his song's lyrics were on every hiphop lover's lips this year. That is influence in my books.
Having said that, I am very pleased to see some guys who do not necessarily get major media coverage being acknowledged. It is a step in the right direction.

That is just ONE GUY's OPINION... like I said, we define and see trendsetting differently as humanbeing. Hell, we still struggling to even define what celebrity if in South African term. We'll get there.
The SATY Awards ceremony will take place on 6 September in Johannesburg. ANN7 is available on DStv, channel 405.
