Five Young South Africans Making A Mark In The Entertainemnt Industry Worldwide

You most likely would not recognize any of the names on this list or even know that these trailblazers and pioneers are actually South Africans. Well, you will be happy to know that Charlize Theron and Candice Swanepoel are not the only Mzansi natives making splash on the international.

From a male model who has worked the runways of Milan, Paris and New York, to an actor and actress on international hit shows in US, and a multi-millionaire director, South Africa has produced some formidable talent.

The Supermodel

Meet Mac Phiri — The toned dark-skinned model who is fast becoming a staple in menswear look-books, fashion editorials and men’s fashion runways. 

Phiri has been previously spotted in editorial campaigns and runways for big names such as Spencer Hart, Vivienne Westwood, and Billy Reid among other renowned fashion designers and houses.  

In May 2014, British label John Lewis picked Mac to represent the special Spring/Summer 2014 menswear collection designed by Irish designer Orla Kiely. He is also a constant feature on fashion weeks in Europe and US. 

The Actor

Meet Adhir Kalyan (born 4 August 1983) best known for his role as Timmy in the CBS sitcom Rules of Engagement. The show is shown here on SABC3. 

Kalyan was born in Durban, to an Indian South African family. His mother, Santosh Vinita "Sandy" Kalyan, was, or still is,  a Democratic Alliance member in Parliament. 

The Director

Meet Neill Blomkamp who is a renowned  film director, writer, producer and animator. He is best known as the co-writer and director of critically acclaimed District 9 and the science fiction film Elysium. He is based out of Vancouver, British Columbia but he was born in South Africa and grew up in Johannesburg. 

Time Magazine named him as one of the 100 Most Influential People of 2009. Forbes magazine named him as the 21st most powerful celebrity from Africa.

The Actress

Meet the gorgeous Spartacus star Lesley-Ann Brandt. Born in Cape Town, South Africa, she is a fluent Afrikaans speaker. In 1999 Brandt emigrated to Auckland, New Zealand, with her parents and her younger brother.

She is now based in Los Angeles and has starred in hit American shows such as CSI;NY and Chuck

The Ingénue

Meet Sasha Pieterse who is a South African born American actress and singer. She is known for her role as Alison DiLaurentis on ABC Family's TV series Pretty Little Liars. Sasha was born in Johannesburg on 17 February 1996 but moved to the United States when she was 3 years old where she was raised in Las Vegas before moving to Los Angeles.
