Yizo Yizo Director Helps DSTV Sell A Positive Image Of Africa

Yizo Yizo director Teboho Mahlatsi has shot a tv commercial for pay-tv company DSTV for a new campaign that celebrates Africa and showcases a different image of the continent.

This Is Africa (#tia) is a new campaign for DStv that’s all about showcasing the African continent in a positive light. The ad was shot in Ghana.

The brand message, “This is Africa. Not how they see it, but how we know it.” reflects the current sentiment of our generation. The message is about breaking down the negative stereotypes, and encouraging people to see the beauty, creativity and potential that exists among African youth.

The campaign was made by Ogilvy & Mather Johannesburg and launched with this TVC – which has arguably the best voice over ever – and continues the conversation at www.dstv.com/tia and on social media via the hashtag #tia hoping to introduce positive dialogue around the continent we call home.

Famed for directing the highly controversial and ground breaking television series Yizo Yizo, winning Best Director and Best Drama series at the Avanti awards (South Africa’s equivalent to the Emmys) for it, Mahlatsi has written, produced and directed many projects, including the documentary Ghetto Diaries for the South African educational channel SABC Education TV, and his short film Portrait of a Young Man Drowning won the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 1999
