SABC3 Replaces Noeleen With Meredith Vieira — NEW TALKSHOW ALERT

With the cancellation of  3 Talk with Noeleen a spot opened up for SABC to air another talkshow and the channel has chosen American Emmy-winning TV journalist and personality Meredith Vieira to take up that slot — for now.

Meredith Vieira has hosted a number of shows in her TV career - The View, The Today Show and Who Wants to be a Millionaire among the most notable. Her talkshow in the US debuted September 8th last year.

While it hasn't really raked in the ratings Stateside, it has clearly been palatable enough not to be canned, a fate suffered by the talkshows hosted by Queen Latifah and Kris Jenner.

According the statement I have just received from the SABC,

The self-titled, daily programme adds some twists to the typical daytime talk format. The show's set at 30 Rockefeller Center in New York resembles Vieira's home - even down to her pet-ravaged furniture and features staples usually seen on late-night shows: a house band, led by Everett Bradley of the E Street Band, and a sidekick, Jon Harris, who also doubles as the show's announcer. Elements that daytime viewers are used to include a mix of human-interest stories - featuring everyday people and celebrity guests and lifestyle segments that highlight Vieira's point of view.

It is important for me to point out that the SABC has put out an RFP which includes requests for talkshows as well so there is a likelihood that SABC3 could have a local talk show sometime this year.

My thought is, keep Toungue In Cheek. Just make it better. Anele is great as a host but add some interesting people on that panel. Carolyn and her friend Michael dePinna are nice people but they are not cut out for being on a show like that.

The failure of of Tongue in Cheek lies solely on it being pre-recorded and the panel. Fix that and you have a talkshow that can easily takeover Noeleen's place on the channel.

I have watched few episodes of the Meredith Vieira Show on Youtube. It does not have the international relatability appeal like The Oprah Winfrey Show or The Ellen Show. Hard to believe but there are a lot of people who are just famous in America so there might be a disconnect there when she has people like that on the show.

What what I saw on the show, she appeals to the Americana viewer as a typical American mom. The show is also setup as mock home for her with an obvious intend to attract the American female viewer. Will that work in Mzansi? We'll see.

The Meredith Vieira Show on SABC3 Mondays to Fridays at 14:00 from 20 March, 2015
