GOLD REEF CITY Hosts SIPHO HOTSTIX MABUSE and POPS MOHAMED Fundraising Concert

Sipho Hotstix Mabuse and Pops Mohamed will be joining forces and using their iconic status to raise funds for ‘Readers R Leaders’, a community based project that aims to promote a culture of reading amongst primary school children in disadvantaged areas.

Congratulations streamed in when Mabuse announced that he had passed his matric at age 60 in 2012. He had dropped out of school in 1969 when his music career started taking off. He returned to complete his high schooling due to his belief in the importance of education. This collaboration with Pops Mohamed to raise funds for ‘Readers R Leaders’ was inspired by this belief.

‘Readers R Leaders’ was started by Cyril Turton, a Wits English Lab graduate, in 2013 after parents and teachers raised concerns on the lack of a reading culture amongst primary school learners, which lead to them being unable to keep up with demanding school work.

‘Readers R Leaders’ was established to teach learners how to read and to motivate them to read by immersing them in great and well-told stories in languages that they can understand. They provide one-on-one reading assistance and also set up book clubs in community centres.

Mabuse and Mohamed will hit the stage on Friday, 24 July 2015 in what promises to be a great evening of music and entertainment. Tickets are available through Computicket and on www.goldreefcity.co.za at R200 per person.

The funds raised by Mabuse and Mohamed’s efforts will enable ‘Readers R Leaders’ to purchase books, train volunteers and provide them with the necessary tools to further provide their reading services to the broader community.
“Education is one of the pillars on which Gold Reef City’s CSI initiatives are focused. Having Sipho Hotstix Mabuse and Pops Mohamed perform at The Lyric here at Gold Reef City further supports our commitment towards this,” adds Kaschula.
