South African free-to-air channel is upping the ante on welfare tv by bringing one of the most popular shows in the world to South Africans who can not afford pay-tv services of DSTV or the internet.

Etv scooped up the broadcasting rights to the hit American drama Empire

Come 2016 Etv will air the first season of the American drama starring Emmy nominated Taraji P. Henson and Terrence Howard, which just started its second season on FOX (DSTV 125 / StarSat 131).

Head of Channel, Monde Twala, shared the information at a media summer programmes reveal on Saturday in Krugersdorp, Johannesburg.

While the new schedule properties were a tad disappointing with the same regurgitated faces such as Dineo Ranaka returning to host a new dance show on the channel,  etv is trying to position itself as a one stop destination for non-paytv viewers — firmly taking on the SABC, which is continuously marred by controversy of late.

Empire season 1 premieres on etv on February 3rd, 2016 at 21h30.
