Nakhane Tourè Impresses US Media With His Rendition Of Nina Simonè 'Be My Husband'

Openly gay [yes that's worth mentioning in this context] South African crooner, Nakhane Toure, has scored himself a mention on one of the biggest LGBT media website in the world. The featured Tourè on their music page for his rendition of a Nina Simone song — which they clearly liked.

The singer-songwriter, who is also a South African Music Award winner, was touted by the website as someone who is quickly making a name for himself in the music world. No doubt having them feature him on the site will add onto that international exposure. is a web affiliate of Logo TV (also simply known as Logo), which is an American digital cable and satellite television channel that is owned by Viacom Media Networks — that's the same company that owns BET, Nickelodeon and other prominent tv channel brands. The channel  and its web partner focuses on lifestyle programming aimed primarily at lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people.

Since February 2012, however, the channel has been shifting its focus away from LGBT programming towards general cultural and lifestyle programming, prompting outrage from the channel's LGBT viewership, who responded by comparing the channel's new non-LGBT programming focus to that of the NBCUniversal-owned Bravo [that's the channel that produces the Housewives franchise in the US].

Of course I think it is great that the channel is more inclusive. I doubt gay people only want to see shows about gays and cross-over of content only gives the LGBT celebrities a chance to be exposed to other mainstream markets.

Touré, who was born in the Eastern Cape and grew up in Port Elizabeth, lists Marvin Gaye, Fela Kuti, Radiohead, Miles Davis and Joni Mitchell among his influences. It came as no surprise that the Brand Confusion singer would cover the iconic Nina Simone’s “Be My Husband” at an unplugged concert for Kaya FM.

Watch out the passionate performance that has everyone talking below.

SIDENOTE: Haai mara Nakhane, we love him. He is a star. Someone please get him a stylist... or just clean it up a bit. Not to change him because individuality and a sense of self is important in the entertainment industry but if he is going to be getting international attention, he may just try and not look like a herd boy anymore. xxx
