Brian Temba and Mahalia Buchanan To Headline Gospel Spectacular at Joburg Theatre

PRESS RELEASE; 04 April, Johannesburg, Seasoned musicians Brian Temba, Connel Cruise, Teboho Moloi and Gospel princess Mahalia Buchanan are set to headline the Gospel Spectacular hosted by the Joburg Theatre from the 13th April to the 23rd April. 

The 10-day event will be a magnificent showcase of South Africa’s top Gospel talent. The show is a feel-good wholesome show for the entire family, catering to all tastes within the genre.

Gospel is the best-selling and most popular music genre in South Africa and the Joburg Theatre is pleased to host this extravaganza. This musical feast is also brought in partnership with ATTV, presenting South Africa’s youthful and supreme talent, using their world-class technology which includes LED screens.

Among the musical greats, the show will host a big ensemble of 30 singers and dancers. The stars will perform a number of popular covers such as award-winning duo Mary Mary’s ‘Shackles’, ‘O Happy Day’, ‘You Raise Me Up’, ‘Malibongwe’, ‘Moya Wam’, ‘Joyful, Joyfu’l and many others. The artists will also get to perform some of their own songs.

Leading the pack is internationally acclaimed and accomplished muso, producer and actor Brian Temba, who currently stars on SABC 2’s popular soapie Muvhango as Ranthumeng. The Mthatha-born singer is also known for his powerful songs: Dominoes and Zanele. He played Simba on The Lion King in the United Kingdom for five years from 2003-2008. He has also starred on various theatre productions even locally.


Incredible vocalist and worship leader known for lending her voice to a number of Joyous Celebration projects, Mahalia Buchanan is excited to be part of this amazing show and to perform alongside people she admires. Her warm and powerful voice has made Mahalia an industry darling, performing at most sought-after events and affording her an opportunity to work with international heavyweights such as Jonathan Butler, Donnie McClurkin and Vashawn Mitchell. A budding TV presenter on 1 Gospel’s Gospel Truth alongside Xolani Mdlalose, Mahalia is a tried and tested Jane of all trades.


Connel Cruise is an incredible artist, who has just returned from touring the United States of America, where he performed at a number of iconic venues in both New York and Los Angeles. He made his debut with a single ‘Not Just Friends’, which received a warm welcome from the public, placing it on high rotation and consequently garnering three South African Music Awards nominations. A serial chart-topper with about eleven singles to his name, Connel released an EP which also launched his international music career, catching the attention of legendary music industry businessman and Island Records boss - LA Reid. Cruise is currently working on a new album due for release early next year.


Bringing the traditional gospel flavor onto the show is the respected and equally talented Teboho Moloi. Hailing from the Free State, Teboho got his break in 2015 with the release of his album Emmanuel. He has worked with the likes of Joyous Celebration and has performed alongside Rebecca Malope, the late Sfiso Ncwane, Solly Mahlangu, Benjamin Dube and Hlengiwe Mhlaba.


The show is directed by the award-winning Andrew Timm and with choreography by Sandy Dyer and musical direction by Dale Scheepers.
