Wizkid Becomes First African Artist To Win Billboard Awards

Nigerian superstar, Ayo ‘Wizkid’ Balogun, has added another African first under his belt and solidified his international artist cred by winning three awards at the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday.

For his contribution to ‘One Dance’, Drake’s global hit song which also features Kyla, Wizkid scored seven Billboard Awards nominations. He also co-produced the track.

‘One Dance’ was nominated for Top Hot 100 Song, Top Selling Song, Top Radio Song, Top Streaming Song (Audio), Top Collaboration, Top R&B Song and Top R&B Collaboration.

The song won Top Hot 100 Song, Top Streaming Song, Top R&B Song and Top R&B Collaboration.

Dubbed Africa's Justin Bieber, the young Nigerian has amassed an impressive international following and raked in some firsts along the way. He was the first Nigerian musician to have over a million followers on Twitter. For his 'Come Closer' he was the first African artist to hit 1 million Youtube views in 24 hours.

At just 27 years old, there is clearly plenty of room and time for many more firsts in this artist's future. I am proud of him. Africa is certainly proud of his achievement. We can only hope he stays humble and becomes as legendary as Hugh Masekela or Fela Kuti.

Billboard award winners are assessed based on their song sales, streams, radio airplay, live tours and social engagement.
